Blackpoint

Blackpoint colonnades – comprising black volcanic basalt

This year I have spent a couple of weekends camping at Black Point, a unique and isolated location on the south coast of Western Australia. The site is named for the black basalt rock formations, whose origins date back 135 million years to Gondwanaland – the southern half of the Pangaean supercontinent. Gondwanaland is composed of the major continental blocks of South America, Africa, Arabia, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, India, Antarctica, and Australia. Overlaid by limestone, the basalt columns resemble the entrance to a courthouse. The view of the waves smashing against this formation and the others around the point are hypnotic. A memorial to several members of a family that drowned off the point is a reminder of the dangers.
